Venice is one of those towns that you visit with high expectations. I was lucky to have visited twice in the past, so this time I went with a plan of exactly what I wanted to see. I traveled there a few days before the carnaval, so it was fairly quiet and was able to get an amazing deal on the plane & hotel room. :)
The light in January is also quite exceptional. It was very cold, but save for one day I had amazing winter light.
While I did the typical Venice sights, like St Mark's basilica and the Doge's Palace, I also spent many hours wondering through the less touristy areas, which are definitely worth it. I also went to some of the Laguna islands: Murano, Burano & Torcello, which I had never visited before.
