Cathedral Notre-Dame-de-Paris is one of the most popular sights of Paris. I remember visiting many years ago when I first arrived in France, and wanting to go back since, although I was always discouraged by the line of people waiting to go in. I thought I would beat the crowds one early Monday morning (I didn't, sadly, but it was a lovely visit nonetheless).
Built over two century starting in 1163, the cathedral is a mix of primitive and rayonnant Gothic architecture. At the time of it's completion, Notre-Dame-de-Paris was the among largest cathedrals in the world. It was also heavily restored in the 19th century, by Viollet-le-Duc. During a recent restoration it was revealed that the facade of the cathedral was once painted with vivid colours.
