Notre-Dame de Fourvière is built on the 'Fourvière' hill in Lyon, the site of the antique roman forum, and the site of pilgrimage throughout several centuries. In the middle of the 19th century, plans arise to enlarge the current sanctuary, plans that eventually evolve into a complete rebuild. After the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, the people of Lyon vow to erect a church dedicated to Mary, built in the Byzantine Revival style.
