Cluny was one of the most powerful monasteries in Europe in the Middle Ages. They built several churches in succession until the French Revolution, when it was sacked and largely destroyed. The church there was the biggest Christian church until they rebuilt Saint Peter's in Rome in the 16th century.
It now houses the École nationale supérieure d'arts et métiers (ENSAM), an engineering school.
