Built in the early 13th century (the first wooden fort dates back to the 11th century) to defend the Breton Marches - the border between the Duchy and the kingdom of France as well as Normandy - the château de Fougères is still in remarkable condition almost a thousand years later. It's size and it's various modifications over the century, tell the story of the region.
It is also remarkable by it's location, on low ground, but built on a large rock in the middle of swamps, acting as a natural moat around the castle.
