A little under 2h from Paris on the train is the lovely town of Amboise. I had visited twice before, quite a few years ago, but for some crazy reason, on one very hot day (37°C, dammit) in June, I decided to go on a little day-trip to get my castle fix :)
First stop, the Château Royal d'Amboise.
While I had visited the town, I had never actually gone inside the château. Perched up high, it dominates the entire town. Once the home of the local nobles, it became a royal residence during the Renaissance, and a favorite for many Valois kings.
Built in the International Gothic style, it now seems quite small, but many parts of the château were destroyed after the French Revolution.
Random fact: it was the main inspiration for hotel Château Marmont in L.A.
