One of the most beautiful villages of France, Carennac is in the Lot, in the Occitanie region of France. It's striking church and adjoining cloister make for a lovely step back in time. While the church dates back to the 11th century, the cloister displays a surprising mix of Roman and Gothic architecture. Almost entirely destroyed during the Hundred Years' War, only a few Roman arches remain, that were later integrated in the 15th century reconstruction.
While the church is freely accessible, you need to go to the tourism office to get a token to visit the cloister - a little know fact that gave us the advantage of us being completely alone during our visit.
