Rouen

Rouen is the capital of Normandy, in the North West of France. It's a medieval city with a rich history. It's also a special place for me. It was the first town we lived in when I came to live in France with my mum as a child. So it was definitely the place where I discovered France and French culture.

Spending a day there in September was definitely a trip down memory lane, and I was amazed at how much I remembered, even 30 (yikes) years later.

Rouen est la capitale de la Normandie, dans le nord-ouest de la France. C'est une ville médiévale avec une histoire riche. C'est aussi un endroit spécial pour moi, la première ville dans laquelle nous vivions lorsque je suis venue vivre en France avec ma mère étant enfant. C'est donc définitivement l'endroit où j'ai découvert la France et la culture française.

Passer une journée là-bas en septembre était un voyage dans le passé, et j'ai été étonné de tout ce dont je me souvenais, même 30 ans plus tard.

Eglise Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc

Rouen is known as the place where Joan of Arc was judged and burnt at the stake in 1431. A modern church stands where Joan's torment took place. Built in 1979, it is reminiscent of a Viking boat. An interesting fact is that the stained glass windows actually date back to the 16th century and were made to Saint Vincent's church, a church destroyed during WWII.

Jeanne d'Arc fut jugée et brûlée sur le bûcher à Rouen en 1431. Une église moderne se dresse là où le tourment de Jeanne a eu lieu. Construite en 1979, il rappelle un bateau viking. Les vitraux datent en fait du XVIème siècle et ont été réalisés pour l'église Saint-Vincent, détruite pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Le Gros-Horloge

One of the landmarks of Rouen, standing over the main street of the old town, is the Gros-Horloge, a historical clock - the mechanism dates back to the 14th century (it's one of the oldest in France) and the dial is from the 15th century.

Rollon

Rollo was a Viking warlord who led his warriors on raids on the Frankish lands around the Seine. In order to bring peace, the Frankish rulers gave him lands (to be known as Normandy, or land of the Norsemen) and Rollo became Christian in the early 10th century. His infamous descendant, William the Conqueror went one to become King of England in 1066.

Rollon, chef de guerre viking qui menait ses guerriers lors de raids sur les terres franques autour de la Seine devient duc de Normandie - afin d'apporter la paix, les dirigeants francs lui ont donné des terres et Rollon est devenu chrétien au début du Xème siècle. Son célèbre descendant Guillaume le Conquérant est devenu roi d'Angleterre en 1066.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption de Rouen

Construction of the current cathedral started in 1145, after the archbishop of Rouen visited theabbey of Saint-Denis (which, along with Sens cathedral are the earliest example of gothic architecture). Like many cathedrals, construction spanned over several centuries, following finances, fires, lighting strikes and also architectural evolutions.

The cathedral is also known for being one of Claude Monet's subjects. He sat at the window of a two different buildings facing the cathedral, one being the current Tourist Office.

The cathedral is the resting place of Rollo, first Duke of Normandy, but also of Richard the Lionhart & Empress Mathilda.

La construction de la cathédrale actuelle débuté en 1145, après la visite de l'archevêque de Rouen à l'abbaye de Saint-Denis (qui, avec la cathédrale de Sens, est le premier exemple d'architecture gothique). Comme beaucoup de cathédrales, la construction s'est échelonnée sur plusieurs siècles, selon les finances, des incendies, des tempêtes mais aussi des évolutions architecturales.

La cathédrale est également connue pour être l'un des sujets de Claude Monet. Il s'assit à la fenêtre de deux bâtiments différents face à la cathédrale, l'un étant l'actuel Office de Tourisme.

La cathédrale est le lieu de repos de Rollon, premier duc de Normandie, mais aussi de Richard Cœur de Lion et de Mathilde l'Emperesse.

Abbatiale Saint-Ouen

In the 14th century, the Saint-Ouen Benedictine abbey was one of the richest and most powerful abbeys of Normandy. It was decided that a new gothic style church would be built in 1318. Works were delayed due to the Hundred Years War, and continued through the 16th century, with the facade being finished only in the 19th century, in a neo-gothic style. The central tower, known as the crowned tower is pretty distinctive and dates back to the 15th century.

The church is currently in a bad state, and only a few weeks ago it was deemed dangerous for visitors and closed, pending urgent work. The woodwork supporting the roof is particularly in danger, and has great value, due to it being similar to the one that burnt last year in the Notre-Dame-de-Paris fire and one of the last 'forests' in France.

Au 14ème siècle, l'abbaye bénédictine de Saint-Ouen était l'une des abbayes les plus riches et les plus puissantes de Normandie. La construction d'une nouvelle église de style gothique a été lancée en 1318, mais les travaux ont été retardés en raison de la guerre de Cent Ans et se sont poursuivis tout au long du XVIe siècle, la façade n'étant terminée qu'au XIXe siècle, dans un style néo-gothique.

La tour centrale, connue sous le nom de tour couronnée, est assez distinctive et remonte au XVème siècle.

L'église est actuellement en mauvais état, et il y a seulement quelques semaines, elle a été jugée trop dangereuse pour les visiteurs et fermée, en attendant des travaux urgents. La charpente qui soutient la toiture est particulièrement en danger, et a une grande valeur, car elle est similaire a celle qui a brûlé l'année dernière dans l'incendie de Notre-Dame-de-Paris et l'une des dernières 'forêts' de France.

Aître Saint Maclou

During the Black Death, and running out of space to bury the dead in the cemetery of the nearby Saint Maclou church, l'aître or cemetery was created in 1348. It was extended in the 16th century when the plague hit the town again. In the 17th century it becaume a school (I know), and housed various different institutions until 2014, when it was restored and opened to the public.

The pillars around the galleries are sculpted with a dance macabre.

Pendant la peste noire, et à court d'espace pour enterrer les morts dans le cimetière de l'église Saint Maclou à proximité, l'aître ou cimetière a été créé en 1348. Il a été agrandi au XVIème siècle lorsque la peste a de nouveau frappé la ville. Au XVIIème siècle, il est devenue une école (je sais), et a abrité diverses institutions educatives différentes jusqu'en 2014, date à laquelle il a été restaurée et ouverte au public.

Les piliers autour des galeries sont sculptés d'une danse macabre.

Musée Le Secq des Tournelles

The small museum dedicated to ironwork can be found in the old Saint Laurent church. The gothic church was deconsecrated after the Revolution and was almost demolished until the city of Rouen bought it in 1893 and later turned into a museum.
